DHAKA: Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami and its nayeeb-e-ameer Delwar Hossain Sayedee are unlikely to have parole to lead the namaz-e-janaza of war crime convict Ghulam Azam.

Azam, former Jamaat chief, died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University at 10:15pm on Thursday. He expressed his last wish either Nizami or Sayedee would lead his janaza.

Later on Friday morning, Azam’s lawyer told banglanews that they will apply for parole of Nizami and Sayedee.

Meanwhile, preparation is underway to seek parole of the Jamaat leaders as one of them can lead the janaza.

Home Affairs state minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said, “I don’t know whether a person convicted of wartime crimes is eligible to be freed on parole to lead janaza.”

He will be freed on parole if he is eligible, he added.

When contacted, former law minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed told banglanews, release on parole is granted on ground of visiting relatives.

But, neither Nizami nor Sayedee is relative to Azam, they have no opportunity to get parole legally, added Shaifque.
