DHAKA: The government is satisfied with the death sentence awarded by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 to Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami for his crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Haque made the assertion while talking to journalists at his secretariat office in city immediately after the verdict on Wednesday.

The minister said, “Rule of law has been established by the verdict and the government is satisfied. Nizami, as a leader of Al Badr, not only ordered to kill people across the country but also worked to break the backbone of independent Bangladesh.”

Anisul Haque also claimed that the judiciary is fully independent and the ICT has conducted the trial independently and the government has nothing to do.

He added: “But the government has provided all kinds of cooperation to conduct the case proceedings. The government helped the prosecution team by providing witnesses and evidences.”

Earlier in the day, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 awarded death sentence to Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami on four charges of war crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.
