Hartal relaxed for Ashura

DHAKA: A 48-hour countrywide hartal, enforced by the Jammat-e-Islami, is relaxed and ended on 6:00pm Monday due to the Ashura.

Previously, hartal was declared to last till 6:00am Tuesday as a protest of Jamaat ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami’s death sentence.

Now, it has been relaxed for 12 hours.

The holy Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), will be observed in the country on Tuesday with due religious fervor and solemnity.

The day is a public holiday.

However, Jamaat called another 24–hour fresh shutdown for Wednesday to protest the Supreme Court’s verdict upholding the death penalty to war criminal and Jamaat assistant secretary general Muhammad Kamaruzzaman for war crimes.

Earlier, it called a 24-hour hartal for Thursday in protest against the death sentence of its policymaker Mir Quasem Ali for war crimes.
