Hartal underway amid violence

DHAKA: The third-day hartal, enforced by Jamaat-e-Islami protesting the death sentence of its assistant secretary general Kamaruzzaman, is underway across the country on Wednesday amid sporadic violence.
 
The leaders and activists of Chhatra Shibir and Jamaat-e-Islami, brought out processions and blasted cocktails in the city and some other districts.

Dhaka: Shibir leaders and activists brought out sudden processions and blasted several cocktails at Jurain and Bakshi Bazar areas of the city in the morning, leaving three people injured at Jurain’s Khalpar area.

Witnesses said Dhaka (East) city committee of Chhatra Shibir brought out a procession at Madartek area around 8:00am.

Organizational secretary Shariful Islam, office secretary Sohel Rana Mintu and publicity secretary Abdul Kader along with others participated in the procession led by Dhaka (East) Shibir secretary M Shamim.

They set fire to tyres and hurled cocktails there, witnesses added.

Meanwhile, a group of Chawkbazar Thana Unit Shibir activists brought out a procession and hurled cocktails at Bakshi Bazar area.

In Sutrapur, Police and Jagannath University unit Chhatra Shibir activists locked into a clash when they brought out a sudden procession in the area, leaving four injured.

Sub-Inspector of Sutrapur Thana Durga Prasad Chakrabarti told banglanews that police fired blank bullets to disperse the procession and bring the situation under control.

No inter-district passenger bus left Gabtali Bus Terminal though inter-district bus left Sayedabad Bus Terminal.

Gazipur: Hartal supporters brought out a sudden procession at Tin Sarak area on Dhaka-Gazipur highway around 8:30am Wednesday and vandalized several vehicles and blocked roads by setting fire to logs.

However, they fled the scene when the police chased them.

Earlier, Gazipur police detained seven Jamaat-Shibir men on allegation of trying to sabotage.

Offices, business outlets and schools were seen open in the district.

Khulna: Local Jamaat-Shibir activists brought out a sudden procession at Babukhan Road area in the town.

Schools and offices were seen open and vehicles were plying. However, No inter-distirct bus left Sonadanga Bus Terminal

Police sources said additional forces have been deployed to ensure security as Bangladesh is facing Zimbabwe in a Test Match here.

The 48-hour hartal, called by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami protesting Kamaruzzaman’s death sentence, has begun from 6:00am Wednesday and will end on 6:00am Friday.

Earlier, Jamaat marked 60-hour countrywide shutdown in two phases, protesting the death sentence of Jamaat Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami.
