Jamaat’s hartal enters 2nd day

DHAKA: The 48-hour hartal, enforced by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami protesting Supreme Court verdict upholding death penalty to its leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman, entered the second day.

The fresh shutdown began at 6:00am Wednesday and will end at 6:00am Friday.

Security measures have been beefed up across the country including Dhaka city. Additional police forces along with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have been deployed to avert any untoward situation during hartal hours.

The first day of the hartal marked vandalism, vehicles torching and crude bombs explosions in different places of the city.

Earlier, a 72-hour countrywide shutdown, marked in two phases, protesting the death sentence of Jamaat Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami for his war crimes, ended on Monday evening.

However, Khulna city is out of hartal purview for the second match of Bashundhara Cement test series 2014 between Bangladesh and visiting Zimbabwe.
