300 Jamaat men among 1,200 held in Rangpur

RANGPUR: Law enforcers, in ongoing drives, arrested 1,200 people from the eights districts of the division sometimes between Monday evening and Thursday to prevent anarchy.

Of the arrestees, around three hundred people are leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir.

Rangpur Detective Branch official Shariful Islam confirmed the matter to banglanews.

Shariful also said that police, in separate drives, arrested some 235 people including 20 Jamaat-Shibir men from the division sometimes between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

They were arrested on charges of carrying out possible destructive activities during hartal hours, Shariful added.

Of the arrestees, some 51 including two Jamaar-Shibir men were held from different places of Rangpur district including Kaunia, Pirgachha, Gangachhara, Taraganj, Badarganj, Pirgangj and Sadar upazilas.

Rangpur Kotwali Thana Officer-in-Charge Abdul Kader Jilani said that the detained are accused in different cases related to mugging, robbing, drug dealings and other criminal offences.

All the arrestees were sent to jail after they were produced before the court, the OC said.
