DHAKA: BNP acting general secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday categorically said information minister Hasanul Haque Inu and his accomplices tried to oust the then Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman led government after liberation war.
Fakhrul made the remarks while delivering his speech as chief guest in a discussion on the spirit of ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’ at the National Press Club.
The day fell on November 7 in 1975.
The BNP leader came up with this assertion in a response to the remarks of Inu that BNP founder Ziaur Rahman betrayed on the spirit of November 7.
Fakhrul said people, who wanted to oust the then Bangabandhu-led government, now have formed coalition government with Awami League (AL).
He commented that the then AL killed 30 thousand Jatiyo Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) men and Inu has now betrayed with their blood shaking hands with the AL government.
According to him, November 7 is a very significant and important day for the country as the patriotic people freed Ziaur Rahman defeating the conspiracy to save democracy.
The BNP spokesperson said, “Our movement is not for assuming power, we stage demonstrations to establish the basic rights of the people”.
“We want to assure people that you should not be frustrated as the incumbent government is not a permanent body and they can not stay in power forcefully”, he added.
Fakhrul said they received huge response from the rallies of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in several districts.
According to the BNP leader, it proves that people of the country does not want the AL-led government.
Terming the current government ‘autocrat’, Fakhrul said the parliament has become one-party rubberstamp as people did not give their franchise.
Mentioning that police on Sunday opened fire at BNP men when they brought out possession in Gazipur, he said the illegal government does not allow the opposition to arrange their programs.
City’s Gonoshashthaya Kendra founder Dr Jafarullah Chowdhury, National Democratic Party (NDP) chairman Golam Mortuza, Islami Party chairman Advocate Abdul Mobin, among others, were present in the discussion chaired by NDP president Shafiul Alam.
