Shaheed Milon Day marked

DHAKA: Shaheed Milon Day was observed in the country on Thursday marking the 24th anniversary of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon’s martyrdom.

On November 27, 1990, the armed cadres of the then autocratic ruler HM Ershad shot dead Dr Milon, the then joint secretary of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), near the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) at Dhaka University in a bid to foil the mass upsurge.

The killing of Dr Milon brought new force in the movement against autocratic ruler HM Ershad.

Bangladesh Postal Service published a ticket worth Tk 2 honoring the sacrifice of Dr Milon.

On the eve of the day, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in separate messages, remembered the sacrifice of Dr Milon for the cause of restoring the democracy in the country.

Different political parties and socio-cultural and professional bodies including BMA chalked out elaborate programmes to observe Shaheed Dr Milon Day including placing floral wreaths and offering of special prayers at the grave of Dr Milon on the Dhaka Medical College campus and at Milon Smrity Chattar near TSC.

BMA organised a discussion on the Dhaka Medical College premises at 10:30am, while Shaheed Dr Milon Sangsad arranged a discussion at the TSC Road Island at 3:00pm.
