DHAKA: BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday categorically said ruling Awami League turned into the worst political party in the world for their activities.
The spokesperson for the party came up with the observation while addressing a discussion at the National Press Club.
The discussion was organized by Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) and Sorbo Dalio Chhatra Oikya marking the 24th death anniversary of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon.
He was shot dead during an anti-autocratic movement in 1990.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “Awami League has now become the worst political party as they killed BNP leaders and activists in the name of democracy.”
He also observed: “Awami League is a traditional political party. This party protested against Pakistan and autocracy previously. But, currently the party is killing democracy by their activities.”
The BNP leader also claimed that the then AL and the party of today are not the same.
AL took part in polls under an autocratic ruler in 1986 betraying the people, he added. Moreover, the election of January 5 was betrayal with people as well, he added.
Fakhrul also said on this day in 1990, the armed cadres of the then autocratic ruler HM Ershad gunned down Dr Milon. He sacrificed his life for the sake of democracy, he added.
Another protest like 1990 is needed now to save the sovereignty of the country and stop political killing and forced disappearance, he said.
He further claimed that the country people are experiencing the worst situation after the liberation war. “The government has taken away the right to speak,” he said.
Fakhrul also alleged that the government wants to remain in the power forcibly.
