DHAKA: International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 on Sunday sent former Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Maulana Sakhawat Hossian to jail for his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity during war of independence.
A three-member tribunal led by its chairman Justice M Enaytur Rahim passed the order at noon after accused was produced before the court.
Moreover, the prosecution is also asked to submit the progress report of investigation before the tribunal by December 30.
Prosecutor of the case Rezia Sultana Chaman was present at the tribunal while there was no lawyer present on behalf of Sakhawat.
The accused appealed for a division in jail as a former Member of Parliament and mentioned him as a cancer patient.
The tribunal also ordered the prosecution to take necessary steps following the jail code.
Earlier on Saturday evening, law enforcers detained Sakhawat Hossain from his rental house adjacent to Master-para Shahi Masjid in Uttarkhan in city’s Uttara area.
