Hartal underway in Gazipur, 6 held

GAZIPUR: The daylong hartal, called by BNP protesting the occupying of party’s rally place by Chhatra League and issuance of section 144 by local administration, is progressing in the district from Saturday morning.   

Hartal supporters vandalized a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Borobari area of the city during the shutdown.

Police foiled a protest procession of hartal supporters at Sombazar in Kaliganj upazila. 

No rally, meeting, picketing and procession were reported from elsewhere of the district. Neither hartal supporters nor hartal protesters were seen in the streets.

But police force and media persons are seen active in discharging their duties at key points of the district.

Few public transports were seen plying city streets in the morning.

Law enforcers, however detained six people from different parts in district early Saturday for allegedly carrying out subversive activities, said Kaliakoir thana officer-in-charge Omar Faruk.

Tongi thana officer-in-charge Ismail Hossain told miscreant set fire to Tongi thana BNP office on Friday night. Before doused by fire service, the fire burnt door of the office.

Earlier, Organizing Secretary of the party and also president of Gazipur BNP Fazlul Haque Milon declared the hartal after attending a meeting of party chairperson Khaleda Zia and other senior leaders on Friday night.

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced countrywide protest programme in this regard.

Earlier on Friday, Gazipur administration imposed Section 144 in Bhawal Badre Alam Government College ground for an indefinite period banning any kind of gathering there apprehending anarchy  as BNP and Chhatra League called rallies there at the same time on Saturday.
