RUPGANJ, NARAYANGANJ: Polling in the Rupganj union parishad (UP) elections is underway on Sunday some 11 years after the last polls amid tight security.
The voting began at 8:00am and will continue till 4:00pm at a stretch.
Sources concerned of election office said a total of 28,566 voters are likely to cast ballot at 100 booths of 15 polling centers across the union.
Of the voters, 14,486 are males while 14,080 are females.
Four candidates are vying for chairman post while 52 for UP member and 15 for reserved female member posts.
The chairman candidates are incumbent chairman Abu Hosssin Bhuiyan Ranu, backed-by Awami League, Farukh Hosssin Bhuiyan, backed by BNP, Hajji Mafizul Islam, Islami Shashontantra Andolan and advocate Kabir Hossain.
A large number of lawmen including Rapid Action Battalion, police, Ansar have been deployed on polls-duty to ensure security during polling times.
