GAZIPUR: The first day of two days’ nationwide hartal, called by Jamaat-e-Islami, is being observed on Wednesday amid stray incidents of violence including vandalism, blasts.
Protesting the death sentence of ATM Azhar, one of the top leaders of the party, for war crimes in 1971, the party enforced the hartal across the country.
Sources said the law enforcers, between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, detained some 25 Jamaat men from different parts of the city.
Among the detainees, sources added, 13 were held from Joydebpur while nine are from Tongi and two are from Sreepur.
Moreover, police, in the morning, fired some 11 round of bullets after hartal-supporters brought out a procession at Tongi College Gate area.
The law enforcers, at that time, have detained another Jamaat man who sustained bullet injuries.
On the other hand, the activists of Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat, blasted a cocktail at Chandna intersection area in the morning.
They had also tried to set fire on rail line at Gazipur Rail Crossing.
