AL asks partymen to take to streets

DHAKA: Ruling Awami League asked its leaders and activists to take to the streets on the occasion of ‘Democracy Victory Day’ on Monday despite pre-scheduled rally canceled due to ban.

Confirming the matter, some senior AL leaders told banglanews that the party gave the direction to deter the BNP men from creating any subversive situation in the city as the Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Chhatra Shibir men vandalized and torched vehicles from Sunday noon.

Party sources said the BNP-Jamaat leader and activist will be more aggressive if the AL men would not take to the city streets. To protect the people and their properties the AL directed their fellows to remain alert in streets.

However, the AL decided that they will not stage rally in the city on Monday due to ban and the leaders and activists of the party will remain alert to avert any subversive situation.

The party was scheduled to observe January 5 terming it as day of democracy but postponed the program showing respect to the law.

But the AL will observe the day playing mass-songs, Patriotic songs and Bangabandhu discourse.

While asking about the program on Monday, AL joint general secretary and food minister Kamrul Islam said the leaders and activist will remain alert in the areas and will observe the day.
