ATRIUM BANQUETING HALL, EAST LONDON: BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman alleged that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had attempted to embezzle the ‘Muktijuddho Fund’.

He came up with the latest controversial allegation while addressing a discussion at Atrium Banquet Hall in East London on ‘Democracy Killing Day’ organized by UK BNP on Sunday afternoon (London local time).

Tarique claimed that after the Liberation War, an Indian officer called on Bangabandhu and show interest to send back a huge amount of money deposited by Bangladeshi expatriates and AL leaders during the country’s liberation war.

“In response of the interest, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman requested to the officer to return the money pouring in sacks, not by cheque or bank draft and also said he would spend the money in next election,” Tarique added.

The senior BNP leader also claimed that he has evidence in support of his allegation.

Pointing at the BNP leader and activists, Tarique said national asset looting, money laundering are the tradition of Awami League (AL) and wish of the embezzlement of the fund proves that Sheikh Mujib started the tradition.

Tarique also urged party-men to take to the streets to ‘free’ his mother, Khaleda Zia, from the confinement.

Terming the country as ‘our mother’, Tarique said the mother should also be freed.

The BNP senior leader said the demonstration will be continued till target of ousting Sheikh Hasina from power do not fulfilled.

He also urged to the party men to segregate each area of the city from another on January 5 and confined the AL leaders and activists at home with the help of locals.

Tarique promised that the AL ministers and leaders will have to face trial those harassed the opponent party-men including BNP.

Pointing at the police and public administrations, he said “You should think about by whose direction you are doing the killing and harassment.”

Citing that the authorities requited police from one or two ‘special’ districts, Tarique claimed that those police personnel are aiding the government on democracy killing.

Terming BNP as the symbol of democracy, the BNP senior leader said BNP founder Ziaur Rahman freed democracy from Sheikh Mujib’s ‘Bakshal’ in 1975 and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia from autocrat JP chief Hussain Muhammad Ershad in 1990.

Alerting the BNP leaders and activists, Tarique said if their movement fails, not only BNP but also the country will be destroyed.

Pointing at the pro-AL journalists, the BNP senior vice chairman asked “You did not ask for the trial of your colleagues Sagor-Runi on fear of the incumbent government. But, you should serve the country with fair information.”

Earlier, Tarique declared to stage demonstration in front of British Parliament on January 5.

BNP central committee secretary of international affairs Mahidur Rahman, UK BNP secretary Kaisar M Ahmed, the unit’s former convener MA Malek, former general secretary Barrister MA Salam, vice president Abdul Hamid and local BNP leader Taimus Ali, among others, attended the discussion chaired by UK BNP president Shayesta Chowdhury.
