DHAKA: BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was detained from the National Press Club area on Tuesday afternoon.
Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested the BNP leader moments after his motorcade went out the press club premises at 4:10pm.
He was taken to the DB office in city’s Kakrail Road at 4:20pm.
Before the arrest, the BNP senior leader briefed the media.
The pro-BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami journalists surrounded Fakhrul’s car when he went out. But, in the meantime, the DB officers got in the BNP leader’s vehicle.
Earlier, He spent the night at the National Press Club.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) deputy commissioner (DC) M Masudur Rahman told banglanews that Fakhrul has been arrested as he was wanted in several cases and he would be produced before the court on Wednesday.
However, the DC did not mention the specific case for which he was arrested.
Police said some 67 cases had been filed in different thanas under DMP against Fakhrul.
