JU expels 23 infighting BCL activists, 6 permanently

SAVAR: Jahangirnagar University Thursday expelled six of the infighting Bangladesh Chhatra League activists, including organizing secretary Shahadat Hossain Reza, from the varsity permanently.

The varsity authority also punished 17 other activists of the ruling party by suspending them for different terms, including university-unit president Rashedul Islam and general secretary Nirjhor Alam Shyam.

The decision was taken at a Syndicate meeting on Thursday evening over the recent factional clash that rocked the campus, said Dr Sharif Enamul Kabir, Vice-chancellor of the university.

The expelled students are Shahadat Hossain, Ariful, Suvashish Kundu and Ujjal of the Department of Archeology, Alamgir Hossain of the Department of Bengali and Sajib of Department of Drama and Dramatics.

Besides, university-unit president Rashedul Islam and general secretary Nirjhor Alam Shyam were expelled for two years each.

A fatal factional clash between president and secretary groups of the university at Al Beruni Hall on July 5 left 30 activists injured.

A committee was formed to investigate the incident and 17 students were expelled temporarily. Among them, 10 were pardoned as the allegation was not proved against them while 16 fresh suspects proved guilty.
