People will reject govt for repression, says Khaleda

DHAKA: Opposition leader Begum Khaleda Zia Thursday said the countrymen would discard the Awami League government again as the scale of their “repression” on people is going beyond all limits of tolerance.

“If the people reject them for a second time, they will not be able to come to power anymore, not even begging pardon again,” the BNP chairperson and ex-PM said, claiming that Awami League had assumed power in 1996 through begging the people for pardon.

Khaleda Zia made the comments at a commemorative meeting marking the first death anniversary of former Finance Minister and top BNP leader M Saifur Rahman.

She also urged the government to rule properly, discarding the path of “harassing” opposition leaders and activists.

Recalling Saifur Rahman and his contributions, Khaleda said he was a competent finance minister and played a important role in the development of the country.

With Saifur’s son M Naser Rahman in the chair, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by BNP Secretary-General Khandaker Delwar Hossain, Standing Committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and MK Anwar.
