DHAKA: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) sought BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s nephew Saiful Islam Duke on a seven-day fresh remand for grilling over the August 21 grenade-attack incident.
Special police super of CID and investigation officer of the case Abdul Kahar Akhand came up with the petition Sunday. But it was disclosed Monday.
Assistant of Special Public Prosecutor Sayed Rezaur Rahman confirmed the remand prayer.
Hearing on the remand petition will be held in the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ali Tuesday.
Production warrant against Duke has been issued to produce him before the court Tuesday as he was detained earlier.
CID police arrested Duke in the August 21, 2004 grenade-attack case on August 25, as the reinvestigation into the incident took newer turns, implicating some functionaries of the then government of ex-PM Khaleda Zia.
At least 23 people, including Women Affair’s Secretary of Awami League Ivy Rahman, were killed and scores injured in the grenade blasts on the AL rally on Bangabandhu Avenue on August 21 in 2004.
Two cases were filed with Motijheel thana in this connection--one for killings and another filed under the Explosives Act.
