DHAKA: Jamaat-e-Islami in a forewarning to the government Tuesday said creating “anarchy in the country in the name of holding trial of crime against humanity” or war crimes would be boomerang for the government.
“The investigation drama is being staged only for destroying the party leadership and character assassination of its leaders,” said acting Secretary-General of Jamaat ATM Azharul Islam in a strongly worded reaction over the government measure for war-crime trial.
Addressing a press briefing at party central office in city’s Maghbazar, the Jamaat leader also threw a protest programme of countrywide meetings and rallies for September 25 and 26 against what the Islamic party called character assassination of the leaders by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).
Jamaat-e-Islami organized the press briefing for explaining its stand on the investigations being conducted by the tribunal, with five top leaders of the party held behind bars to stand the trial at the first go.
The ICT members are visiting the constituencies of the Jamaat leaders for taking depositions from witnesses regarding their alleged involvement in the crimes during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
The Jamaat leader alleged that the common people are barred from coming in front of the investigating team. “The team during its visit to different areas in the country is taking false statements of the leaders and activists of Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League and grand alliance,” he said.
Assistant Secretary-General of Jamaat Mujibur Rahman, Publicity Secretary Tasnim Alam and Dhaka city acting Ameer Hamidur Rahman Azad MP were also present.
