Election on time as per Constitution

DHAKA: Minister without portfolio Suranjit Sengupta, also advisory council member of ruling Awami League, on Saturday categorically said next general election would be held in proper time as per Constitution.

Criticizing the remark of standing committee member of opposition BNP Barrister Moudud Ahmed on amendment of the Constitution in the next session, he said, “He spoke in that way to spread confusion only.”

He also said that there is no need to amend the Constitution.

Suranjit came up with the observations whie addressing a discussion meeting organized by ‘Bangabandhu Adarsha Mullayon Gobeshona Sangshad’ in the city on occasion of August 15, the death anniversary of Sheikh Mujib.

The rule to elect interim government in the present Constitution and in the Constitution of 1972 is same. That means the process of election under interim government is already in the Constitution, he added.

He further said that the Representation of the People Order (RPO) is also same in the current and 1972’s Constitution.

He alleged that BNP is staging movements against the sovereignty and the state, not against the government.

With president of the organization Sheikh M Jahangir Alam in the chair, former joint general secretary of Awami League Mojaffor Rahman Paltu, president of the standing committee of Women and Children Affairs of JS Fazitunnesa Indira among others were present on the occasion.
