DHAKA: The opposition BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed categorically said the Constitution is for the people, but people are not for the Constitution.

“The Constitution, which can not uphold people aspirations, loses its sanctity. Constitution is not Holy Quran,” he added.

He came up with the observations while addressing a discussion titled ‘Politics of Conspiracy and Current Bangladesh’ at the VIP Lounge of National Press Club on Monday.

Bangladesh Youth Forum organized the discussion to commemorate 6th Jail Release day of Opposition Leader Khaleda Zia and party’s Vice Chairperson Tarique Rahman.

Moudud also said: “The Constitution of Ayub Khan did not survive against the hope of the people of Bangladesh in 1957. Later election was held in 1970. But the Constitution was changed for the people as the will of the people is Constitution.”

“The next general election must be held under a caretaker government. The then (During 1995-96) BNP government was forced to initiate caretaker government as Awami League observed hartal for a total 173 days,” he added.

With the president of the Forum M Saidur Rahman in the chair, the discussion was addressed, among others, by advisor to BNP Chairperson Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, Dr AZM Zahid Hossain and senior joint general secretary of LDP Abu Nasser M Barkatullah.
