FENI: A local Awami League leader was expelled from the party for giving legal assistance to the defendant in the case filed over attempted murder of Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi.
District AL president Abdur Rahman Bikom confirmed the expulsion around 12:30 pm on Thursday (April 11).
The expelled AL leader-advocate Bulbul Ahmed Sohag-is the chairman of Kazir Bag Union of district sadar. Besides, he had been performing the duty of general secretary of union AL.
Earlier on Thursday (April 10), remand was prayed for Maulana Siraj Uddaula, who is the principal of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa, and other accused in the trial court.
The court granted five days of remand instead of seven days. On that day, advocate Bulbul Ahmed Sohag declared to file an appeal plea against the lower court verdict and provide legal assistance for the defendant throughout the course of the trial.
Nusrat Jahan Rafi, a female student of the madrasha in Sonagazi upazila, succumbed to her burn injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Wednesday night (April 10).
Prior to her arrival at DMCH, the victim underwent treatment at upazila health complex then at Feni Sadar Hospital.
On March 27, police arrested Principal Maulana Siraj Uddaula for sexually assaulting Nusrat in his room at the Madrasa.

Following the incident, a portion of the students staged human chain and demanded release of the principal.
On the other hand, another portion of the students also formed human chain demanding his punishment.
On Saturday morning (April 6), Nusrat went to the exam center at Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa.
Later, some students, who are loyal to the principal of the madrasa, took her to the roof and set fire on her, according to brother of the victim.
At her screaming, locals, students and teachers took her to hospital.
