DHAKA: Teachers of public universities threatened work abstention for indefinite period if their demands are not met by October.

The warning was announced on Tuesday as the meeting between the education minister Nurul Islam Nahid and the protesting teachers at the secretariat in city ended without any concrete solution.

But both the minister and teachers hoped that the existing problems will be solved soon.

According to the teachers, they will observe work abstention for indefinite period from November 1 if their demands of removing the salary discrimination and status of the teachers are not met by the end of this month.

A 15-member delegation including Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association president Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed and secretary general ASM Maqdud Kamal held a close-door meeting with the minister.

He said that the university teachers have been organizing protest movements for past five months.

‘We did not observe any work abstention as an honor to the Prime Minister and the education minister,’ Farid Uddin said, ‘We hope the problem will be solved soon’.

‘If our demands are not met, then will go for work abstention for indefinite period from November 1,’ he added.

However, after the meeting the education minister informed the media that demands of the teachers will be placed at the cabinet.
