DHAKA: Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid called upon teachers of public universities to keep confidence in the government.
He said, “The government respect teachers. Teachers’ dignity stands above everyone else. We have given priority to the demands of the teachers.”

The minister came up with the assertions while addressing the opening ceremony of the fourth national conference at Ahsanullah Science and Technology University auditorium on Friday.

After declaration of the eighth national salary scale teachers has been a movement to end discrimination and protest "anomalies" in the new scale.

Earlier this month, they announced to stage non-stop strike from November 1 if an independent salary commission for the public universities is not formed and the problem is not solved by this month.

Nurul Islam Nahid said, “We sat down with the teachers, have long talks with them. They have to keep confidence in us. The prime minister and the government have respect to teachers.”

The National Committee for the Eradication of salary discrimination has been reconstructed. The committee will begin work soon, he added.

"Teachers will be given a higher salary and status in future,” the education minister said, “We try our best as if teachers will be the number one individual.”

The education minister also urged teachers to be dedicated in their professions.
