A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) laboratory established with the financial aid of Bashundhara Group has been inaugurated in Rangamati.

Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authority (BEPZA) Chairman Paban Chowdhury inaugurated the Lab at a programme at Rangamati Medical College Hospital building on Thursday morning.

Rangamati Deputy Commissioner AKM Mamunur Rashid, Zila Prishad chairman Brish Ketu Chakma, Superintendent of Police Alamgir Kabir, Civil Surgeon Dr Bipash Khisha were also present among others in the event.

On June 26, Bashundhara Group, the country’s leading business conglomerate, donated Tk 6.9 million to facilitate the establishment of the PCR laboratory to help detect Covid-19, the global respiratory illness caused by Sars-CoV-2.

Paban Chowdhury, also a bureaucrat entrusted with the task of monitoring the coronavirus pandemic situation in the hilly district, handed over a cheque for the amount of money to Rangamati Civil Surgeon Dr Bipash Khisha.

Earlier, the business conglomerate in association with the government set up the country’s largest makeshift coronavirus hospital at International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB) in the capital.

Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan had proposed constructing the hospital.

Bashundhara Group Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir donated Tk 100 million to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.               

In addition, the company continues assisting impoverished people with food and providing personal protective equipment for frontline fighters including members of Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Police and other law enforcement agencies.
