Highway blocked, 20 factories shut

ASHULIA, DHAKA: More than 50 people were injured in sporadic clashes between garments workers and law enforcers on Baipail-Abdullahpur highway on Sunday morning.

Witnesses said that workers of several garments started protest from morning and blocked the highway to press their demand of minimum Tk 8,000 salary.

The agitating workers also vandalized couple of vehicles during the protest.

On information, police rushed to the spot and charged baton, fired rubber bullets and tear shell to disperse the workers which triggered sporadic clashes.

Besides, authorities of 20 factories in Jamgora-Shimultola and adjacent areas declared their units shut amid workers protest.

Director of Industrial police Mostafizur Rahman told banglanews, “We are prepared to keep the situation under control and additional law enforcers have been deployed in risky points.”
