GAZIPUR: At least 20 people, including five bullet hit, were injured as police opened fire on agitating garments workers near BSIC area of Tongi industrial belt in the district on Tuesday.
The incident took place at Zaber and Zubayer garments factory of Noman Group at Tongi industrial area in the noon.
Witness said agitating workers staged work abstention and broke out processions protesting an abuse occurrence of their female fellow by a factory security staff around 9:00am.
Police rushed to the spot as angry workers vandalized factory materials.
Later, police opened fired 60 rounds of rubber bullets and teargas shells to disperse the agitation that left at least 20 workers injured.
The protesting workers also vandalized two police vehicles.
Officer-in-Charge of Tongi Thana Abul Kalam Azad confirmed the matter to banglanews. The situation is now under control, he added.
He also informed that additional police forces were deployed in the area to avert any untoward situation.
