Govt works to preserve rule of law

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday said independence of the judiciary is a vital to preserve the rule of law as court is the last resort of the oppressed.

She also said: “Incumbent government is working to preserve the rule of law, human rights and fundamental rights. We have taken initiatives so that the justices and lawyers can discharge duties independently.”

The premier came up with the assertions in her speech after inaugurating the newly built Dhaka Ainjibi Samity Building and laying foundation stone of Chief Judicial Magistrate Court building in the city.

She also said, “Government is working to ensure people’s legal rights as per constitution.”

In the last phase of her speech, PM granted Tk one crore for the development of bar library and assured of giving internet connections to facilitate lawyers getting books online.

The construction work upto level four of the 10-storey building has completed and rest of the work is likely to be completed by December 2014, sources said.

Former minister Advocate Shara Khatun MP, State Minister for Law Advocate Quamrul Islam and Dr Mustafa Jalal Mohiuddin MP among others were present in the programme.
