DHAKA: Visiting Commonwealth delegation urged ruling Awami League to resolve the prevailing political crisis quickly.
The delegation came up with the plea in a meeting with the ruling Awami League at its Dhanmondi political office in the city.
While talking to the journalists, Head of the Democracy Section of the Secretariat’s Political Affairs Division Martin Kasirye came up with the disclosure on Wednesday noon.
Martin Kasirye also said they have come for a pre-election assessment of the ongoing political situation the field level of Bangladesh. We have already met with the Election Commission. We also will meet with BNP leaders.
In response to a question on whether Commonwealth will send an election observer mission for the elections that are scheduled to take place in January 2014, Kasirye said no such decision has been taken yet.
The assessment mission will report to the Secretary-General on its findings, which will form the basis of a decision on whether or not to constitute a Commonwealth election observer mission.
Kasirye added that they wanted to know to the ruling Awami League why BNP is not joining in the election.
He added that Awami League assured them about a free, fair and impartial election.
Earlier, a three-member delegation of commonwealth had meeting with the chief election commissioner at around 10:00am.
Meanwhile, political affairs officers of commonwealth Amna Jatoi and Clara Cole joined in the meeting.
