Born after Jan 1, 2005 cannot cast vote in next election: EC

Election commission (EC) on Wednesday (October 25) said those born after January 1, 2005, will not be able to use voting rights in the upcoming 12th National Assembly elections.

According to EC officials, this decision was taken in a monthly coordination meeting held recently at EC building in the capital.

Director General of National Identity Card (NID) Division AKM Humayun Kabir in the meeting said citizens born on or before January 1, 2005, can exercise their voting rights in the upcoming elections. Only the names and necessary information of those voters will be available on the voter list.

He said registrants whose date of birth is after January 1, 2005, even if they get NID, their name will not be on the voter list and they will not be able to exercise their voting rights.

Those born on or after January 1, 2005 are actually registered, but they have not reached the age limit to become a voter, he said.

Meanwhile EC Secretary Md. Jahangir Alam also directed the Director General to implement it.

In this regard, EC Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath said, apart from pamphlets, campaigning will be conducted in this regard through various media.
