Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal today (October 31) said as per the constitutional obligation, the next general elections will be held on time.

He said: “I want to make it clear that the polls must be held in time following electoral procedures. We are firmly committed to holding the elections.”

The CEC made the remark while talking to reporters after holding a meeting with US Ambassador in Dhaka Peter Hass at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital's Agargaon.

He also said, “There should not be such misunderstanding among the people that the elections would not be held if there is an adverse atmosphere.”

During the meeting, Kazi Habibul Awal said, "The UN envoy wanted to know about the election environment, and from our side, we make it clear that we have no option.” 

Awal said the Election Commission has a constitutional obligation to hold the elections in a specific timeframe.
