Businessman dies after police torture, alleges family

A businessman died after two policemen had allegedly tortured him for extortion during a raid at his Narayanganj residence last night (November 7). 

The deceased Nurul Islam hailed from Burumdi village in Sonargaon upazila.

The deceased daughter Mithila in this regard said ASI Elias and a constable came and demanded Tk 1 lakh from her father. The cops also threatened to involve him in a political case, if he refused to pay, she added.

She also alleged, "We agreed to give him Tk 50,000, but ASI Elias wanted the full amount. He handcuffed my father and tried to take him out of the house. When my father resisted, a scuffle took place between them. Then, they hit my father's hands with sticks. At one point my father fell to the ground. After that the policemen left the house."

Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police Billal Hossain regarding the death said Nurul died following police torture is not true. The police went to the house after getting information that the person had died.

Inspector Saiful Islam, in-charge of Taltola police outpost, said, "Police went to Nurul’s house to recover drugs. We left the place immediately when nothing was found. He may have died out of fear of police as he was a heart patient."
