A female readymade garment (RMG) worker was killed and another injured in a clash with law enforcers in Konabari area of Gazipur on Wednesday (November 8).
The deceased Anjuara Khatun, 28, worked at Islam Garment in Gazipur area.
The workers claimed that the two persons were shot during the protest at the intersection of Zarun Char Road in Konabari around 8:30 am.
Sub-Inspector Bachhu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost, confirmed the matter.
He said seriously injured Anjuara was rushed to the DMCH where she was declared dead this noon.
Besides, the injured Jalal Uddin, 48, is receiving treatment at DMCH, he added.
On October 21, the RMG workers demanded that their minimum wage be increased from the existing Tk 8,000 to Tk 20,390 while the owners have proposed to increase it to Tk 10,400.
Meanwhile, the government on Tuesday announced Tk 12,500 as the minimum wage for the RMG workers.
The government has raised the basic wages by 56.25% and declared a minimum wage of Tk 12,500 for the RMG makers.
Rejecting their owners’ proposal, the garment workers have been staging demonstrations in the capital and its adjoining areas to press home their demand for a minimum wage of Tk 23,000.
The government has deployed a huge number of law enforcers from different law enforcement agencies, including BGB, Rapid Action Battalion, and police, to prevent any further untoward incident.
