RMG workers block Mirpur roads for wage hike

A section of garment workers barricaded roads in Dhaka's Mirpur-13 area on Saturday (November 11) demanding an increase in their wages.

RMG workers blocked the road in front of the police convention hall at Mirpur 13 in the capital today around 2 pm.

Earlier, the government announced Tk 12,500 as the minimum wage for the readymade garment workers on November 7 amid the ongoing workers' protest.

The new wage structure for ready-made garment workers would be put into effect on December 1st of this year.

However, the apparel workers have been taking to the streets for days to realise their demand for a minimum wage of Tk23,000.

Seeking anonymity a garment worker said, “We won't do anything with the salary that the owners set. We are on to the streets to demand that our salaries be increased.”

Earlier today, a total of 130 garment factories have been closed in Savar, Ashulia, and Dhamrai industrial areas for an indefinite period amid the ongoing demonstrations of the apparel workers for increasing their minimum wages.
