DHAKA:  BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed Friday said the ruling Awami League government itself would not go for reviving the original constitution of 1972 through repealing the fifth constitution amendment, as he mentioned some shortcomings in it.

“The government is creating confusion over the issue to divert public attention and to hide its failure,” said the BNP standing committee member at a roundtable in the city.

Bangladesh Cultural Academy organised the discussion titled ‘Termination of 5th amendment of constitution: Threat to national liberty’ at the National Press Club.

Claiming that the original constitution has some shortcomings, which were fulfilled by the late president Ziaur Rahman, he said it is not possible to go back to the ‘72 Constitution by scrapping the Fifth Amendment.

He observed the constitution of 1972 was good, but there were some shortcomings which were addressed by late president Ziaur Rahman, Moudud told a banglanews24com.bd correspondent after the meeting.

The former law minister raised the moot question that if communist party can do politics in the country, why not the religion-based parties.

Another standing committee member of BNP, Gayeswar Chandra Roy, in his speech said the government is trying to repeal the fifth constitution amendment for reestablishing the ‘Baksal’ rule in the country.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is set to unravel the full version of the verdict on the much-talked-about case of repeal of the constitution fifth amendment anytime this month (July) to end a long wait for what comes out of the radical change in the country’s fundamental law.

Competent sources said the apex court has already completed the main text of the briefly pronounced judgment, which is now being reexamined by the judges.
