A Bangladeshi man has been shot dead by India's Border Security Force (BSF) near the Minapur border in Thakurgaon's Haripur upazila, officials said.
The victim, identified as Askar Ali, 24, son of Kanura from Jibanpur village, was reportedly gunned down early Saturday (12 July) near border pillar 353 inside Indian territory.
According to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local sources, the incident occurred around 4am when Askar and several others crossed the barbed wire fence and entered Indian territory. Troops from the BSF’s Kishanganj Battalion opened fire, fatally shooting Askar on the spot. His body remains approximately 200 yards inside India.
In response, the BGB has deployed additional personnel along the Haripur border to prevent further escalation. Indian forces have also reportedly reinforced their presence on the opposite side.
The 42 BGB Battalion in Dinajpur confirmed that they are in communication with the BSF and have requested a flag meeting to retrieve the body.
“We are making all efforts to engage with the BSF and bring the body back through diplomatic channels,” said a BGB spokesperson.
