The killing of scrap trader Mohammad Chand Mia, also known as Sohag, in front of Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka will be prosecuted under the Speedy Trial Tribunal, Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul has said.

In a Facebook post on Saturday (12 July), Dr Nazrul, also a law professor at Dhaka University, said that the government is committed to ensuring swift justice in the "brutal and shocking" murder.

He confirmed that five suspects have already been arrested and that police have launched a high-priority investigation.

“The case will be transferred to the Speedy Trial Tribunal in accordance with Section 10 of the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act, 2002,” he wrote.

Dr Nazrul added that authorities intend to ensure a prompt and exemplary punishment for those responsible.

The killing occurred on Wednesday (9 July) in broad daylight near the main gate of Sir Salimullah Medical College, commonly known as Mitford Hospital.

Graphic footage of the attack, which was circulated widely on social media, triggered nationwide outrage and demands for swift justice.
