The Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RMP) has suspended two personnel for engaging in “unprofessional behaviour” when shooting at Abu Sayed, a job quota reform activist, at point-blank range on 16 July.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Amir Hossain of Rangpur Police Lines and Constable Sujan Chandra Rai of Tajhat Police Station have been suspended for involvement in the death of Abu Sayed, confirmed RMP Commissioner Md Moniruzzaman to reporters on Saturday.

A preliminary investigation has confirmed that the two police personnel used shotguns “unprofessionally” at the time of Abu Sayed’s death, Md Moniruzzaman said.

On 16 July, Abu Sayed, a student of the English Department at Begum Rokeya University, was killed while protesting against the disproportionate quota system in government jobs.

Police filed a case the following day and a four-member probe committee was formed on 18 July.

The committee submitted the preliminary report on 1 August.
