Organizer fails to give info at press briefing over attacks on Hindu community

A press briefing was organised to address recent attacks on Hindu temples, houses, and businesses in Khulna, which reportedly occurred following the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government.

Al Amin Sheikh Jani, Publicity Secretary of the World Hindu Struggle Committee, however, failed to provide specific information about such attacks on the community while briefing the journalists at the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) building on Wednesday (August 7).

Jani, a resident of Khulna, claimed that numerous Hindu properties were attacked in the wake of the government change. However, when pressed by journalists for specific details about the locations and extent of the damage, Jani was unable to provide any information. This lack of concrete data left many attendees frustrated and skeptical.

Besides, Mohammad Naeem, a co-coordinator for Rupsa Upazila in Khulna, tried to address the media. Naeem's incoherent statements and eventual admission of ignorance regarding the attacks added to the confusion.

He admitted, "I don't know anything... We were cleaning the road in Bangabandhu College area with the students. They called me to come here."

Following his apology to the journalists, Naeem left the conference, leaving Jani to face further questions alone. Reporters sought clarity on the legitimacy and activities of the World Hindu Struggle Committee. Jani mentioned that the organization is headed by Shipan Kumar Basu, who resides in Delhi. He also identified himself as a former member of the National Youth Party in 2016.

It should be mentioned that since the resignation of the Sheikh Hasina government, Muslim students have been guarding Hindu temples and places of worship. Besides, army members are patrolling the areas.
