Metro service won't resume tomorrow

The metro rail service will not resume on 17 August as the authorities have yet to be able to start the necessary technical tests.

In a press statement on Thursday, the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Ltd (DMTCL) said the government on 11 August instructed it to resume the operations of MRT Line-6 also known as metro rail after completing the technical tests.

“But due to unavoidable reasons, the necessary technical tests could not be started yet,” read the statement.

Sources at the DMTCL said the elevated rail services are not possible to resume at the moment as a group of employees are observing work abstention to press home their six-point demand, including salary and allowance hikes.

Since 18 July, metro rail operations have remained suspended amid violence centring the quota reform movement, which later turned into a mass uprising that ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

On 19 July, an unruly mob vandalised Mirpur-10 and Kazipara stations.
