Rehabilitate martyrs' families soon: Jatiyo Nagorik Committee

The Jatiyo Nagorik Committee has called upon the government to rehabilitate the families of martyrs immediately killed during the ‘Anti-discrimination Student Movement’.

They made this demand from a gathering held in front of the National Museum around 11.30 am on Saturday (October 5) amid heavy rain.

They also formed a 55-member body to implement the manifesto of the recent movement and shape a new political settlement.

The organizers called for swift trials of those responsible for the July massacre, proper treatment for the injured, and urgent measures to improve law and order in the country.

Convener Nasiruddin Patwari and Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain were present at the rally, alongside family members of the martyrs.

Saiful Islam, father of Martyr Mominul Islam, who was killed by police in Gulshan on 19 July, expressed his grief, saying, "I never thought I would be able to stand here and speak. The sacrifice of my son brought me here today. I am proud of him." He urged the interim government to ensure justice, saying, "I want to see my son’s murderers brought to trial before I die."

Similarly, the father of Martyr Maruf Hossain recounted how his son was injured by police in Badda on the same day and later died while being transported to Dhaka Medical. He criticised the authorities for delaying justice and expressed frustration with the system.

Addressing the rally, Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain condemned the Awami League government for its mistreatment of the people, highlighting the rising commodity prices and the lack of justice for the martyrs. "Bangladeshi citizens are still suffering under Indian dominance, and it is time the state took responsibility for the families of those martyred," he stated.

The committee urged the government to take immediate action against those responsible for the July killings and provide much-needed relief to struggling families.
