4 killed in Kushtia lightning

Four people, including a housewife, were killed in two separate lightning events in Kushtia’s Daulatpur upazila on Wednesday afternoon.

Five others were also injured in the incidents, including two critically wounded.

The incident took place at Hosenabad Gorerapara and Farakpur areas in Mathurapur Union of the upazila.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Daulatpur Police Station Mahbubur Rahman confirmed the matter. 

The deceased were identified as Awlad Hossain, 60, son of House Zoddar from Gorerapara; Nizam Hossain, 42, son of Moyen Ali; Tarikul Islam, 20, son of Mujam Hossain; and Jahura Khatun, 40, wife of Zaman Hossain from Farakpur village.

Citing local and family sources, OC Mahbub told, 7-8 farmers were working in the fields of the Gorerapara area when lightning started striking the vicinity at about 4:30pm. The famers took shelter in a nearby makeshift hut. A lightning struck the hut leaving all the famers inside collapsed. 

Other farmers from nearby areas rushed the injured to the Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared three farmers dead.

Meanwhile, housewife Jahura Khatun was struck by lightning while working near her home in Farakpur village. She was also declared dead after being taken to the hospital.

Daulatpur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Touhidul Hasan said, all of them were brought to the hospital dead.

He further mentioned that two of the five injured were receiving treatment there for critical wounds.
