5 Bangladeshis arrested in Tripura for 'illegal border crossing'

Tripura police have apprehended five Bangladeshi nationals among eight from the border village of Baishnavpur in South Tripura district.

The arrests followed an illegal border crossing from Bangladesh into India on Monday afternoon.

Reports indicate that the detained group, including a child and two minors, was taken to Sabroom police station for questioning. The Bangladeshi nationals are from Jagannath village under Ramgarh police station in Khagrachari district, Bangladesh, while the Indian citizens are from Muhuripur village in Baikhora, South Tripura.

Police revealed that one of the Indian detainees, 60-year-old Shambhu Pal from Muhuripur, had reportedly arranged his daughter’s marriage in Ramgarh, Bangladesh. On Monday morning, the group crossed the India-Bangladesh border near Ramgarh and entered Baishnavpur.

Acting on a tip-off, Sabroom police, led by Officer-in-Charge Apu Das, conducted a joint operation with the Border Security Force (BSF) and apprehended the group at a rubber plantation in Baishnavpur. The detainees were brought to the Sabroom police station for further interrogation and are expected to be presented in court today.

This incident has heightened concerns about the increasing infiltration of Bangladeshi and Rohingya nationals, a trend reportedly linked to the political instability in Bangladesh following the ousting of the Sheikh Hasina government.
