A recent study reveals that 55% of young people in Bangladesh are considering moving abroad for higher education and employment, with popular destinations including Saudi Arabia, Canada, and Australia.

The findings are part of the third series of the British Council's "Next Generation Bangladesh" report, conducted in November-December 2023. 

The survey interviewed 3,081 youths aged 18 to 35, and the report was released on Wednesday (Nov 6) at Dhaka University.

According to the report, national pride and optimism about the country’s future are waning among Bangladeshi youth. Only 51% now feel that the country is moving in the right direction, a drop from 60% in 2015.

Unemployment remains a major concern for 42% of young respondents, especially those with lower educational backgrounds, as 69% of them have completed schooling up to grades seven to ten. Additionally, 32% believe that lack of job opportunities is driving some young people towards criminal activities.

The report also notes that due to limited formal job opportunities, many youths are turning to informal employment.

Regarding preferred destinations, 27% of respondents would like to move to Saudi Arabia, 18% to Canada, and 13% to Australia. Other countries attracted between 1% and 2% of the respondents. The survey also highlights that young people interested in Saudi Arabia mostly seek work, while Canada and Australia are top choices for education.
