First phase voting underway

DHAKA: The voting in 97 Upazilas in first phase Upazila Parishad election is underway on Wednesday morning.

The polling started at 8:00am and will continue till 4:00pm without any break.

The Election Commission (EC) Secretariat declared poll schedule to hold election at first phase in 102 Upazilas but the voting declared postponed due to boundary complication in Rangpur Sadar, Pirgacha, Gangacharam and Kaunia Upazilas.

EC sources said that the election will be held peacefully as no negative report was received from country’s intelligence agencies.

Besides, following the election one platoon army personnel have been deployed in every upazilas along with regular law enforcers including Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Police and Ansars.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed said that special security measures were taken for minorities so that they can cast their votes without any fear.
