Since the interim government took office, tensions have persisted in Dhaka-Delhi relations on various issues. However, while ties with Delhi have cooled, Dhaka's relations with Beijing have gained momentum. In some cases, Dhaka’s preference for Beijing over Delhi has become more apparent.
First Diplomatic Visit to Beijing
Under the previous Awami League government, foreign ministers traditionally made their first bilateral visit to Delhi. However, the interim government broke this tradition as Foreign Affairs Adviser M. Touhid Hossain made his first bilateral trip to Beijing.
This shift sends a clear message that Dhaka is now prioritizing Beijing.
China as an Alternative for Medical
Many Bangladeshis travel to India for medical treatment due to lower costs and ease of travel. However, following the political shift on August 5, visa complications for Bangladeshis have increased. Although India still issues emergency medical visas, Bangladesh has proposed China as an alternative destination for medical treatment, especially in Kunming. If successful, this initiative will make healthcare in China more accessible for Bangladeshis.
China’s Role in the Rohingya Issue
China has been mediating between Bangladesh and Myanmar for years over the Rohingya crisis. Although a solution is yet to be reached, Bangladesh continues to rely on China’s diplomatic efforts.
Lower Interest on Chinese Loans
Bangladesh has requested China to lower interest rates on its loans from the current 2-3% to 1%. Additionally, Dhaka has sought an extension of loan repayment periods from 20 to 30 years. China has assured Bangladesh of a positive response, and if agreed, this move is expected to further strengthen bilateral ties.
Beijing’s Expectations from Dhaka
Chinese President Xi Jinping has three key global initiatives: the Global Development Initiative (GDI), the Global Security Initiative (GSI), and the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI). China had earlier invited Bangladesh to join these initiatives. During Hossain’s visit, China renewed its proposal. However, Bangladesh stated it would review the initiatives before making a decision.
During his visit, Hossain highlighted the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh-China diplomatic relations and expressed optimism about deeper cooperation in economic, cultural, and other sectors. However, he also emphasized that Bangladesh aims to maintain a balanced approach with major powers like China, India, and the United States.
Experts’ Opinion
Former Bangladesh Ambassador to China Munshi Fayez Ahmed told Banglanews that this visit was significant given the changing geopolitical scenario.
He stressed that China is a crucial partner for Bangladesh in business, trade, politics, and diplomacy. On the other hand maintaining strong ties with India is also essential.
From January 20-24, Hossain visited China and held a bilateral meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on January 21. He also visited Shanghai, further deepening Dhaka-Beijing relations.
