A Chattogram court has denied bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of the Sanatani Jagaran Jote and head of the Pundarik Dham, in five cases filed with Kotwali Police Station.
Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Hasanul Islam issued the order on Thursday morning (July 24).
Assistant Public Prosecutor Md Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury told Banglanews that bail was sought for Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari in five cases, including one over the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam. Following hearings from both sides, the court rejected the bail petition.
A legal team led by Dhaka-based lawyer Advocate Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya represented Brahmachari during the hearing.
Additional police personnel were deployed in and around the court for security during the hearing. People entering the court premises were subjected to security checks.
On November 26, 2024, following a court order denying bail in a sedition case, Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was placed into a prison van.
As his followers began protesting, police and BGB personnel used batons and sound grenades to disperse them.
Later that afternoon, during the clash with law enforcement, Advocate Saiful Islam Alif was hacked to death near the Rangam Community Hall.
In connection with the incident, five cases were filed over obstructing law enforcement from performing duties, attempted snatching of an accused, vandalism, and the planned murder of Saiful Islam Alif.
