Ex-Minister Nuruzzaman placed on 5-Day remand

A Rangpur court on Friday (January 31), placed former Social Welfare Minister Mohammad Nuruzzaman Ahmed on five-day remand in a case filed for killing a student, Mahmudul Hasan Munna, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Rangpur Metropolitan Cognizance Court-3 Judge Debi Rani passed the order after Investigation Officer SI Mostafizur Rahman Nuruzzaman before the court at 10:00 am.

After that Investigation Officer sought a 15-day remand, following which, Judge approved a five-day remand.

Police said Nuruzzaman Ahmed is a named accused in the murder case of student Mahmudul Hasan Munna during the anti-discrimination student movement. Munna’s father, Abdul Majid, filed the case on August 29 last year at the Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Kotwali Court.

Nuruzzaman was arrested on Thursday night around 9:15 pm from his brother Waheduzzaman’s house on Central Road in Rangpur city.

Defense lawyer Itfa Akter opposed the remand, arguing that Munna was killed in Rangpur while Nuruzzaman’s home is in Lalmonirhat, claiming he was not involved in the incident.

Reports suggest the former minister allegedly ordered attacks on protesting students in Rangpur and Lalmonirhat during the movement. After the government’s fall on August 5, he had been in hiding.
