Ferry operations on the Aricha-Kazirhat and Paturia-Daulatdia routes have been suspended since Saturday night due to heavy fog, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded at four terminals, authorities said on Sunday morning.
Nasir Mohammad Chowdhury, Deputy General Manager (DGM) of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) in Aricha, said that the fog intensified around 10:30 pm on Saturday, blanketing the waterway and obscuring the ferries' beacon lights.
As a precautionary measure to prevent accidents, ferry services on the Paturia-Daulatdia route were halted, causing 12 ferries to remain stuck at both terminals, he added.
Moreover, five ferries have been stranded at Aricha-Kazirhat terminals since 11:30pm caused by the thick fog, said the BIWTC official.
The suspensions halted more than 600 vehicles at the four terminals.
The stranded vehicles include freight trucks, night coaches, passenger buses, private cars, microbuses, and some pick-up vans carrying perishable goods.
Authorities have informed that ferry services cannot be resumed until the fog clears and conditions improve.
